I don’t have the patience. As far as I can tell from skimming he has maybe two paragraphs worth of content?

Or does he? Go to Autotraderdotcomslashoversteer to find out.

Actually don’t, because he hasn’t put up the post yet.

Or you can go to Autotrad er.com/oversteer and read my content!

(It’s actually really cool being able to say that)

Politely, n o real insight nor bombs of truth were dropped. I think what I said last year applies today, and will indefinitely.

He forgot one more circumstance when buying new isn’t the worst thing. If you keep your cars for a long time, say 10 years,  then the depreciation is basically meaningless and you know it’s been maintained.

I agree wholeheartedly. The issue is that new car buyers — of all backgrounds and ages, mind you — are highly unlikely to hang onto a vehicle that long, as they get bored, experience a shock to income, or have different needs that the current vehicle can no longer satisfy. Hell, we all know people that couldn’t even wait to pay off their car. Just trade ‘em in, roll that loss into a new loan, start all over, or so they think. Leasing is an attractive option for those that just like to change things up on a frequent basis.

Absolutely, every circumstance has to be looked at separately. I think about the people who hang on to their cars because I’m one of them, not that I buy new even then. I’ve had my current DD for 9-10 years and it was 3 years  old then. Man, I’m ready for a new car.

I can’t actually imagine myself having  any vehicle for such a span. Longest I’ve ever held onto one has been a little over 5 years. If I keep my current car for even 3, it’ll be a miracle.

Honestly if we weren't trying to get a new house I probably would have bought a new one a couple of years ago but that's still a longish time.

Took him 10 minutes to finally say “If no one buys a new car, then there are no used cars”.

He danced around it for a while with the enthusiasts part but really, I see way way way WAY too many people getting excited to buy a newly announced model “used, 5 years later”. An d then they get mad that the options/colors/etc they wanted didn’t sell since it only sold to people who spent their money and they bought gray, automatic, non-performance versions of that car.

#1 reason to buy a new car - you can get EXACTLY what you want (provided it’s offered by the manufacturer). You want to team their bright purple paint with the coupe body style and the optional gold wheels with the dual sunroof but skip the leather? Shine on you crazy diamond!

But it is good to be reminded of these things every once in a while, e ven if they were true 30 years back as they are now. I never said he would share some brand new information that nobody knows about. I sent this to some of my non-enthusiast friends and family becuase not everyone is an experienced expert like folks on Oppo who have bought/leased, own and sold multiple cars and is constantly unnecessary car shopping and can speak on the topic anytime.

Sometimes, just retelling the truth is good enough, given the millions of people who watch his videos   who have different levels of experience and knowledge when it comes to this.

I think there are more of those people than you realize. Much of my family is kinda like this. However, by definition, they don’t buy a lot of new cars.

The last two new cars I bought are 14 and 19 years old now - one is in my driveway, the other one is in the garage.

It sounds like you and I are in a similar boat. I’ve owned my car for... just over 11 years now. I’m hoping to keep it running for at least another 2-3 years, and then replace it with either a plug-in hybrid or fully electric. But in the mean time, getting the house paid off is highest priority. I’m even struggling to bring myself to buy some nice new tools (3D printer, MIG welder, new computer ) until the house is paid off.  It’s kind of “Use it up, wear it out, make due, or due without” as long as I can.  Would I love to get a new (to me) car?  Certainly.  I spotted a BMW i3 REx for $22k CAD, which is the cheapest I’ve ever seen.  But can I justify it to myself?  Nope.

Absolutely true. All of our cars stick around about 15 years. So buy the best example of what you want and enjoy!

Fully depreciated 7-owner Craigslist gems are how I get my variety. Usually I buy a ‘92 V6 Ford Tempo for just $7,200 (RARE) , I rebuild it from the ground up until it’s perfect ($$$) , then I sell it for $3. Winning!

Good on you. I’ve kept my Cherokee for something like 17 years, but it’s not been my daily for much of that. If it was, I would have gotten rid of it long ago.
